How does Braveheart fit in as a sports movie? I always preferred it to Gladiator, which I find too self-serious. Braveheart knows it is ridiculous and revels in it.

It's been a long time since I saw it, but I don't think it quite has the same sporting arc – except, perhaps, for the dynamic between the disappointed father Edward I and his effeminate son Edward II (and his lover/companion who I think is meant to be Piers Gaveston). To an extent that reminds me of the sort of dad who wants his son to play football and is unhappy when he is more interested in theatre...

I think Braveheart is a very weird film with a lot of latent homophobia that we can probably trace back to Mel Gibson himself, if I had to guess. But it definitely is ridiculous, yeah, and often fun – though Gladiator also has its own moments of camp, particularly in scenes involving Joaquin Phoenix or Oliver Reed.
