lol this is interesting. i think they communicated well, honestly, and neither bf not gf are wrong. like another commenter said, bf can prob find someone who is totally fine w him having an in-game gf. gf is totally valid to feel a way; she can certainly find a new boo who isnt getting lewds from a video game char.
tbh, i would break up with a beau if he was doing what this guy is doing cos it feels incredibly lame to me personally, but it doesnt mean what hes doing is wrong or cheating lol. its def interesting that, like u say, this sort of thing is only going to become more prevalent in the future, ha.
maybe it would be less of a big deal if more games were catered to women in this way? like if u could get (sexy, tasteful, demure) dick pics and emotional validation from an in-game npc fake bf in an otherwise “normal” adult game (aka, not a game meant for titillation alone)
In general I agree, these games still tend towards catering to men. Incidentally, you can romance two guys in Cyberpunk as well (one is bi, the other only romances female characters), though my impression is that vastly fewer gamers opt for them. They’re also not as well written, in my opinion.
But yeah, I don't necessarily see it as all that different to writing self-insert romantic fan fiction, say, which is much more traditionally female-coded behaviour. Perhaps there are mods for dick pics? I'm not gonna Google it...
I thought this was going to be about fictosexuality, which it isn't but is kind of tangentially related? And I think would definitely feed into that concept--which will definitely become a bigger issue in the future, I think. It certainly adds basis to how these types of imaginary social worlds/relationships are supported by official materials in some cases.
I know there are plenty of fictosexuals who are in relationships in the real world as well as with their fictional character, and the real life partner seems fine with it, so perhaps the Reddit OP will find someone who is fine with it at some point...
Full disclosure: I had never heard that term until just now, but you're totally right, it's very very similar. I suppose it's only going to get more intense with Gen AI, right?
I've experienced this myself first-hand -- though my girlfriend was also a player in the campaign, so maybe her angry reaction to my character's relationship with the NPC was just very intense roleplaying.
